When is the Right Time to Water Forklift Batteries?
Water After the Battery is Fully Charged!
Just making sure forklift batteries get watered can be challenging. But always remember, never water batteries before they have been charged!
Always water batteries after they have been fully charged!
Why Watering Before Charging is a Problem
When a battery charges, it generates heat. This heat causes the electrolyte solution inside the battery to expand. If you fill the battery with water before charging, there’s no room for this expansion, leading to several issues:
-
Boil-over: The expanding electrolyte can overflow from the battery during charging, creating a hazardous situation.
-
Acid damage: Spilled acid from a boil-over can damage the battery itself, the forklift, and the surrounding area.
-
Reduced battery life: Frequent boil-overs significantly shorten the battery’s overall lifespan, costing you time and money in replacements.
The Golden Rule: Always Water After Charging
To prevent these problems, always add water to your forklift battery after it’s fully charged. This allows space for the electrolyte to expand during the charging process, preventing boil-overs and protecting your battery.
Regular Water Level Checks
Even with proper watering procedures, it’s crucial to monitor the water level in your forklift battery regularly and add water only when necessary and after charging.
